Every map tells a story. The places we’ve been, the places we will go, and what we find along the way. What would the map of your story look like?
Using collage and other mixed-media techniques this workshop will help you explore your own story and create a unique, one-of-a-kind map to express it. If you’re looking for a new way to explore your creativity and want to play with art supplies in a cozy, supportive environment, this class is for you!
Experiment and Play
We’ve all used maps to help us get around while traveling or in our daily lives. But have you ever made a map based on your own perspective and experiences?
In this class, we will use some free-writing techniques to explore questions of personal geography, landscape, identity, and belonging. We will then use the information we find within to create a visual representation of our stories. I will help you translate abstract ideas into images, and guide you through composing and creating a unique mixed media piece. There is no wrong way to complete this assignment – I encourage everyone to try something new and step outside their comfort zones.
The workshops are 2.5 hours long and held either in my home or yours, in order to create a cozy atmosphere, and to reinforce the fact that no special studio space is required to play with art. When I am hosting I also provide healthy vegetarian snacks and herbal tea. Occasionally I run the workshop as part of an event such as the Edmonton Resilience Festival, or a local market.
All materials will be provided, though I encourage you to bring any personal ephemera that you would like to include in your map: photographs, copies of important documents, tickets/receipts, actual paper maps, brochures, newspaper clippings, etc.
