Learn the beautiful art of linoleum block printing in your own home, no art experience or expensive equipment required.
This class is for you if:
- You want to be more creative but don’t know where to start
- You’d like to learn a new artistic skill but don’t want to invest a ton of time or money
- You want to try something new but feel intimidated by typical art classes because you think you won’t be able to keep up.
Linoleum block printing involves creating a stamp that you can use over and over. It’s a great way to turn a simple design into a work of art. You can see examples of my own work here and here and the above photos are of prints that students made in previous workshops.
What to Expect
During this five hour workshops, I take you step by step through the process of making a single colour block that you can print from again and again. Here’s how:
- We start with the basics of linoleum block printing and I show you how the art form is used and give you some tips to keep in mind.
- Then we work on finding a design that you love. I have plenty of reference materials, as well as access to Google images and a printer so you don’t have to worry about coming up with an image from your head, or drawing anything by hand. I help you work out the design and give you feedback on how to make it best suited to the medium.
- I show you how to transfer the image and carve the block. Your design is now a stamp that you can print with.
- I go over printing techniques and help work out any problems you may have with getting the image to transfer to paper.
What else do I get?
You will leave this workshop with a series of prints on high quality paper that you can hang on your walls or give away. Each print will fit in a standard 5×7″ frame. You also will get to keep your linoleum block and I will have tools and materials for purchase in case you want to continue your printmaking journey at home.
I use basic materials, many of which you can find at home, to show you how easy it is to practice this art form without a studio or expensive equipment.
Besides printmaking, you will also learn about the creative process. In this blog post I talk about some of the surprising mental and emotional benefits of taking a class like this one.
I keep class sizes small so I can give each participant individual attention and make sure all their questions are answered. If you’re stuck at any stage in the process – design, carving, or inking – I’m here to help.
The workshops are held either in my home or in yours, in order to create a cozy atmosphere, and to reinforce the fact that no special studio space is required to make these prints. When I am hosting I also provide healthy vegetarian snacks and herbal tea.

Q: I don’t have any artistic experience. Will I be able to manage this class?
A: Yes! This is an introductory class aimed at anyone interested in learning a new skill. You don’t even need to draw anything! I will have plenty of reference images available for tracing. I will help you every step of the way if you are uncertain about what to do.
Q: Is it hard?
A: For most people the most challenging part is carving the linoleum. It does require a good amount of effort and there’s always the chance that it won’t turn out exactly as you imagined. In my mind, that’s part of the fun.
Q: Is this class appropriate for children?
A: This class is for adults only.
Q: I have my own supplies – can I bring them?
A: You can! I will also have everything available for you to use.
Q: Do I need to bring anything or have anything prepared ahead of time?
A: Nope! Just bring a good attitude and maybe some of your favourite tea.
Q: What should I wear?
A: Participants tend not to get ink on themselves, and the ink is water soluble, but just to be safe, don’t wear your favourite clothes.
Q: Do I need to purchase supplies ahead of time?
A: Everything you need to complete the workshop will be provided. If you decide afterwards that you would like to purchase supplies I may have some for sale, depending on stock.
Q: Is my registration/ticket transferrable?
A: Yes, tickets are fully transferable.
Q: Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?
A: Nope! I will have your name on my list.
Q: What is the refund policy?
A: I can issue full refunds (minus $5 service fees) up to two days before the event. After that point no refunds will be issued. If you have purchased a supply kit and are unable to attend I can refund you the cost or ship it to you at your own cost (around $13 in Edmonton).
